Coulrophobia comes to the Junction
Life of often gets in the way of dreams. It’s all that irrational fear of what-if and but then that gets in the way – and it’s time to stop letting this fear command us.
This is the spine of the operation called Coulrophobia, a musical-ish comedy by Gaby Milky that’s running at the Junction until tomorrow (November 19).
In the play King Orchid, the ruler of Blinktonasia, has established a strict reign over his people with the primary objective of eliminating the perceived threat of the monarchy—the Clowns. And the Clowns remain resolute is trying to protect their identity.
Milky explains, “The inspiration for Coulrophobia stemmed from the clash between dreams that society deems unacceptable and the struggle individuals face daily. It originated from a dream that challenges societal norms, reflecting the constant conflict between personal aspirations and societal expectations.”
The two-hour play, he says, took years to develop. “It was initially written in 2017 in Lebanon, where it performed to a sold-out audience. Recently, it underwent a rewrite for the 2023 Dubai production, completed in just a few weeks.”
This round of Coulrophobia comprises actors recognised at short+sweet festival and it’s produced by H72 productions.
By the end of the play, says Milky, “The hope is that audiences leave inspired to pursue their dreams, rekindling fading aspirations. By reconnecting with the nostalgia of childhood, the play seeks to ignite the spark that motivates individuals to reclaim and pursue their purpose in life.”
